Sam Bush is a true American music legend and is considered an originator of progressive bluegrass music. With 3 Grammy wins, 16 Grammy nominations, too many IBMA awards to count and an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award under his belt, he continues to lead the charge in improvised string music.

The Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride has long since established himself as roots royalty, revered for both his solo and sideman work, which includes time with Harris, Lyle Lovett, and Béla Fleck. Americana Music Association awarded Bush the Lifetime Achievement Award for Instrumentalist. Punch Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, and Greensky Bluegrass are just a few present-day bluegrass vanguards among so many musicians he’s influenced. His performances are annual highlights of the festival circuit, with Bush’s joyous perennial appearances at the town’s famed bluegrass fest earning him the title, “King of Telluride.”

The Refinery, Charleston’s newest mixed-use development designed for a work and play lifestyle, located at 1640 Meeting Street Rd., will begin hosting live concerts and events at its new outdoor music amphitheater this August. The new venue, in conjunction with Charleston-based entertainment agency Ear for Music, will welcome a variety of local, regional and national performing acts to the Lowcountry, including Trouble No More and Trevor Hall August 13th and 14th. Ticketing information and a complete schedule of events will be released soon.

“Our goal was to create a dynamic space that is accessible to the community, yet unique to downtown Charleston,” shares Lindsay Nevin, owner and CEO of The Flyway Companies. “We can’t wait to host an array of talented performers and entertainers from across the country right here in Charleston. The Refinery will be a place where locals and visitors alike can come together and experience the Lowcountry lifestyle in a unique way.”

The Refinery’s outdoor space accommodates up to 1,500 patrons and will offer fast and fun food and drink options during events via the property’s anchor tenants, The Whale, Sweet Grass Vodka and a new restaurant that will be announced soon. The Refinery building features 17 commercial spaces, as well as an outdoor rooftop called “The Platform,” which will offer an elevated VIP experience for concertgoers. The Platform is also available to rent for private events for up to 150 guests.

The Refinery Amphitheater will feature a covered stage, green space, permanent restrooms and concessions in retrofitted shipping containers, as well as unique greenrooms for artists, housed in a renovated railcar. Inspiration for the retrofitted railcar greenroom came from the property’s historical roots and industrial surroundings, which was once owned by Standard Oil.

January Blog

HAPPY NEW YEAR from all of us at Ear For Music! What a year it has been, from Party at the Point, Rockin' The River, Woolfe Street Playhouse gigs, weddings, private & corporate events, to closing out the year on a howling note with the Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming Show & 28th Anniversary Concert. We raised more than three times as much as last year and a portion of the proceeds goes to building the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and funding for pediatric cancer research.

With the turn of the new year, we have some serious Bizness to announce in the upcoming months, but for now Markie your calendars for this kick off event...

Biz Markie at The Alley

You and your friend read that right. Biz Markie is coming to The Alley Charleston on January 21st, 2017. Biz Markie has been creating beats and dropping dope life lessons about trust and relationships since the '80s. Also, our very own DJ Natty Heavy will be DJing before Biz Markie takes the stage. So, if you're looking for some sage advice, something to do on a Saturday night, or you just simply love Biz Markie and DJ Natty Heavy, then Markie your calendars for January 21st and get your tickets now before it's sold out!

Brought to you by The Alley, The Becket Agency, Ear For Music, Southern Eagle SC, David Aylor Law Offices & Breakthru Beverage Group.
