Mex 1 Sessions with Sol Driven Train

After successfully raising $2,500 at the first installment of Mex 1 Sessions with Drivin N Cryin to benefit Carolina Studios, Mex 1 and Ear for Music present the next installment with Sol Driven Train on Sunday, April 1. Tickets are limited, but still available here.

Post-Race Block Party on Hutson Alley

4/7/18

Ear for Music, Holy City Hospitality, and Charleston Music Hall are excited to host a Post-Race Block Party on Hutson Alley following the big race on April 7, 2018. The Block Party will take place from 9am-1pm with a portion of proceeds benefiting The MEDI Community Resource Center. Indoor and outdoor festivities will include raffle items from local vendors and live music from The Black Diamond Band, Dave Landeo, and Finnegan Bell. 

Event entry will be $10 per person (kids free 12 and under) and attendees can check-in at either entrance to Hutson Alley located at 39 John St. or 26 Hutson St.

Dickey Betts Band Returns to Macon, GA

5/17/18

Dickey Betts, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, is returning to Macon, GA for a hometown show with the Devon Allman Project and Duane Betts. This historic show at the Macon City Auditorium on Thursday, May 17th is not to be missed!

After the show at Macon City Auditorium, join us for the Official Dickey Betts After Party at the Hargray Capitol Theatre. Jaimoe (Jai Johanny Johanson) is a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, one of the most influential groups of all time. A musician dear to the ABB Family, Heather Gillis, will join him. Gillis is a young guitarist/ vocalist, formerly of Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band, who now fronts a talented group of her own that ABB fans won't want to miss!

Welcome to the EFM Family, Zandrina!

We’re proud to introduce Zandrina Dunning as EFM’s newest booking agent to join our team.

A singer/songwriter and vocal instructor originally from Boston, Zandrina’s called Charleston, South Carolina home since the 90s and has been on the music scene since the early 2000’s.

Her professional musical journey began while studying classical music at South Carolina State University in 2000. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Merchandising & Management in 2004.

In 2005, she temporarily relocated to Atlanta for a few years to pursue her music career full time. While residing there, she worked with a subsidiary of the Island Def Jam Music Group, assisting with the promotion and marketing of new artists, collaborating with local recording studios on new campaigns, and also making a name for herself as a session vocalist.

Upon returning to Charleston in 2007, Zandrina has performed with local and national recording artists to include Multi-Grammy Award winner George Benson, Darius Rucker, and American Idol Season 11 finalist, Elise Testone. She has graced the stages of the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville TN, the Lincoln Theater in New York City, and many other noted venues throughout the US and internationally.

Zandrina is no stranger to either side of the business. From the east to the west coasts she has had experience performing in all facets of the industry; from weddings and other special events to the bar scene, Zandrina has been a part of it all. We’re happy to have her!

The Love Funk Tour is This Weekend! 

The Love Funk Tour featuring Cory Wong & Mr. Talkbox from Bruno Mars’ song 24k Magic is this weekend! Join us at the Charleston Music Hall this Sunday, February 18th at 8PM. You’ll recognize Cory Wong from Vulfpeck, known for his guitar skills and collaborations with Questlove, Ben Rector, Gene Simmons, and Blake Shelton whom he met on NBC’s “The Voice”. Mr. Talkbox is an internet sensation known for his chart-topping covers videos and more recently, original material. You’ll know his voice from Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar’s songs, or Avery Sunshine’s 2018 Grammy Nominated Song “Heaven Is Right Here”. Tickets are still available. Get them here.

ROCKET MAN SHOW ON 2/23

Tokyo Joe’s Rocket Man Tribute conforms to the model of a real Elton John concert. While going to great lengths to wear costumes that are exact replicas of those worn by Elton himself, and to entertain visually with state of the art lighting, Rocket Man is ultimately about the songs that are like a soundtrack to the lives of so many people.

Performed by the Columbia, SC based rock quartet Tokyo Joe at Charleston Music Hall on February 23rd, Rocket Man is sure to leave every Elton John fan feeling as though they have experienced a tribute performance worthy of the original. Anyone who loves Elton John and his music will love this show!

Blue Dogs Raise Over $189,000 at Homecoming Show! 

The Blue Dogs hosted their 5th Annual Homecoming and 29th Reunion show Friday, December 29th at Charleston Music Hall. Each year, this show is put on in concert with The Blue Dogs' friends and fellow musicians to benefit the MUC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. This year's event, presented by O&O Hooch and Darius Rucker's Backstage Whiskey, featured artists like The Connells, The Killer Whales, Travis Allison Band, Don Merckle & The Blacksmiths, Peyton Tochterman, Leisure McCorkle, Holland Teed, and more. Blue Dogs Perform at MUSC Children's Hospital New Site  

Each year, The Blue Dogs rally together close friends and musicians for a 2-night event to benefit MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. This year, we got to join them on a tour of the hospital’s new site in Downtown Charleston and see them perform for the construction team, put on by WEZL 103.5’s Crews-aide for Kindness with Crews Chevy. That morning, the Blue Dogs played a special show in the Atrium of the hospital’s current site, caroling and singing songs with patients. Last year alone, with help from the Press On Fund, the Blue Dogs homecoming show raised over $130,000 to benefit pediatric cancer research at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. This year’s show will be on Friday, December 29th at Charleston Music Hall.

Radney Foster Returns to Charleston With New Music / Book Combo "For You To See The Stars"

Veteran Nashville songwriter Radney Foster returned to Charleston this month with a brand new project. For You To See the Stars is not only the name of his new album, but also a collection of short stories influenced by his upbringing in Del Rio, TX and his experiences as a musician. Radney made an appearance at Buxton Books the night before the show to sign autographs, play some music, and sample some bourbon with an intimate audience. His show at the Woolfe Street Playhouse featured Finnegan Bell and The Blue Dogs' Bobby Houck, with whom he cowrote on of his biggest hits, "Half of My Mistakes". Read More Here

The Blue Dogs Super Goo Pre-Jam Lineup Announced  

Each year, before the Blue Dogs' annual Homecoming and Anniversary Celebration, they host a more intimate gathering of friends, family, and musicians at The Music Farm. Partial proceeds from both shows will benefit the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. Most Memorable Gig Definitely St Patty's Day on River Street in Savannah 2016. We probably played for 10+ hours a day for 4 days straight, but played for maybe 200,000+ people at a time! To see a couple thousand people vibe and party with you is an experience you cannot put into words. 

If You Weren't a DJ, What Would You Do For A Living? I would probably get into some type of engineering job. I love fixing things, I fix all of the equipment for the Clubbullies when something goes down.

Best Part About Being a DJ  Being able to help someone escape their problems of the day.  We are kind of like therapists.  People come out to dance, have fun, and get away from the issues of the world, and I make sure to help them in anyway I can, whether it be a wedding or a birthday party.

Our Music Community Bands Together to Organize Celebration of Life for Nathan Salley to Benefit Note 4 A Note Foundation.

Last month, our Charleston music community lost a talented, professional, and well-respected musician. We always enjoyed working with Nathan Salley, and would love your support in donating to a newly established foundation in his honor - Note 4 Note. Note 4 Note aims to help musicians battling with depression, and will be hosting a Celebration of Life in his honor on Sunday, November 26th at The Washout on Folly Beach. This benefit show will feature local musicians like Ward Buckheister, Emily Curtis, Presley Beacham, Charles Cannon, Ben Fagan and The Holy City Hooligans, Jamisun, and more. The Return of Plane Jane at Wild Wing Cafe Mt. Pleasant!

Plane Jane is back at Wild Wing Cafe on Coleman Boulevard for a throwback Pre-Thanksgiving Turkey Day Jam on Wednesday, November 22nd. Music starts at 9pm. Wild Wing Cafe's North Charleston location will also have a Pre-Turkey Day Bash on Big Wednesday, with live music from The Secrets at 10:30pm.

Patrick Davis & His Midnight Choir Return to Charleston Music Hall

Nashville songwriter Patrick Davis is returning to his home state of South Carolina to celebrate the release of his new EP, Where Does It Go, on Friday, October 27th at Charleston Music Hall. This venue's intimate space is perfect for this event - Patrick Davis is known for his storytelling abilities, and coupled with his 11-piece band featuring horns and his own family members, this night is going to be unforgettable. We had the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the new music, and love the relatable lyrics, particularly in his new song "Million Miles Away", which gives a nod to our hometown of Charleston. Radney Foster at Woolfe Street Playhouse

Legendary Nashville artist Radney Foster will be hosting special guests Bobby Houck of The Blue Dogs and Finnegan Bell at an intimate acoustic evening at the Woolfe Street Playhouse on November 16th. Foster has written eight number one hit singles, including his own "Nobody Wins," and "Crazy Over You" with duo Foster & Lloyd. His discography contains countless cuts by artists ranging anywhere from country (Keith Urban, The Dixie Chicks, Luke Bryan, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) to contemporary (Marc Broussard, Hootie & The Blowfish, Kenny Loggins, Los Lonely Boys). Foster's most recent project is a CD/book combo titled For You To See The Stars, a collection of stories and music inspired by his home state of Texas. Part of the proceeds benefit RebuildTexas.org to support ongoing flood relief. He'll be reading excerpts from his book and performing a song at Buxton Books prior to his show on November 16th. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real’s Charleston Debut

The first thing we heard was his voice and it stopped us in our tracks. It was familiar, but original, and at the same time, it was a voice we felt we hadn’t heard in decades. We were at the Targhee Music Festival in Wyoming this past July when we first heard Willie Nelson’s son Lukas and his band Promise of the Real. We knew we had to bring them to Charleston, but Lukas doesn't need his last name's help. Since 2007, he and his band have been quietly making waves, and most recently became Neil Young's choice for his studio and touring band. Last month, they released their most recent, eponymous studio album, and on September 21st, they’ll be making their Lowcountry debut at the Music Farm with The Travelin’ Kine opening for them. Little Bird is bringing their surf rock/jazz/Americana vibe back to The Commodore this October 5th for another killer show! Originally from Annapolis, MD, these guys have called Charleston home for the past two years and gained a loyal following in the Southeast. EFM Featured Artist: Seth G

If you haven’t seen Seth G play his violin around town yet, or seen his music videos that mashup current pop songs with his classically trained talent, you’re missing out. Seth Gilliard is a Charleston native and 2012 Furman University graduate that’s making waves in the local music scene with his originality and creativity. Since graduating and being featured as a soloist with the Furman Symphony Orchestra, the Southcoast Symphony Orchestra, the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, he’s performed for Oprah and garnered over a million views on YouTube for both his covers and original work. Ear For Music Moves Across The River

With the new year comes a new office; Ear For Music relocates to Mt. Pleasant, SC. It has been a fun and wild ride in the heart of Charleston, SC, but we are ready for a change in scenery. You will now be able to find us in the up and coming town of Mt. Pleasant at 1007 Johnnie Dodds Blvd, suite 100. Out team is over the moon with this new modern office space. The building itself is shared among plenty of new and unique start-up companies that we can't wait to possibly team up with for some exciting new projects. Our new office space also gives us access to shared conference rooms and huddle rooms. We can't wait for you to visit us at our new location and continue to work with us here at Ear For Music. 

Little Bird Live at The Commodore

If you were one of the lucky ones who caught Little Bird at Woolfe Street Playhouse a few months ago, then you know just how amazingly talented they are and you know just how unique the venue is at Woolfe Street Playhouse. However, if you missed them then here is your second chance to see Little Bird, check out a hip venue, and kill two birds with one stone. The first bird is Little Bird, they will be live at The Commodore on April 6, 2017. Little Bird hails from Annapolis, MD and has called Charleston, SC home for the past two years. They blend surf rock, jazz, and Americana into a high energy killer live show. In 2015 and 2016, the band played and headlined festivals such as Bayfunk, Pink Moon, Silopanna, Doah, EastPortaRockin' and more. Little Bird has also shared the stage with G. Love & Special Sauce, Pressing Strings, Long Miles, Fortunate Youth, and many more. Little Bird will continue their bird call at The Commodore on April 6, 2017.

The second bird is The Commodore, a local vintage bar and music venue. This posh venue has hosted many jazz and soul bands over the years. The Commodore building, formerly known as A Touch of Class, has occupied its spot on Meeting Street since the 1950s. These walls have witnessed the greats from the jazz, soul, and funk era such as James Brown and Marvin Gaye. On April 6, 2017, The Commodore is excited to have Little Bird imprint their music into its walls, too. 

Greg Humphreys Electric Trio at The Commodore

Who's ready to have an electric time with Greg Humphreys Electric Trio at The Commodore on Thursday, May 11th. Fresh off their debut of "Lucky Guy", Greg Humphrey and his Electric Trio are ready to positively charge the dance floor and have their music resonate throughout the venue. "Lucky Guy" is their debut album that finds the critically acclaimed artist creatively invigorated. Within this album, you will find your ears tickled with sweetly soulful Americana and raucous roots rock that showcases Humphreys' elegant virtuosity and his heartfelt songwriting. Greg Humphreys Electric Trio and The Commodore is a match made in heaven, and it would be sinful to miss them on Thursday, May 11th. 

Diner En Blanc - Charleston, 4/27

We are absolutely charmed by this exquisite event better known as Diner En Blanc. This elegant large-scale picnic that originated in Paris will be gracing the lovely town of Charleston, SC in a top secret location that will be revealed at the very last minute. The eloquent Le Diner en Blanc recalls elegance and glamour of French Court Society. Draped in all white with the comportment of the greatest decorum and etiquette, patrons gather for a mass "chic picnic" in a public space that is kept secret until just minutes before their arrival. Over the course of the evening, guests from different backgrounds engage one another, experiencing the beauty and value of their city's public space by participating in the unexpected. Beyond the spectacle and refined elegance of the dinner itself, guests are brought together from diverse backgrounds by a love of beauty and good taste. Patrick’s “Patrick Davis & Midnight Choir” is an 11-piece band featuring horns & background singers created by PD in early 2016 from both his own artistic vision & the soundscapes of his songwriting & performing heroes Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett & Bruce Springsteen. Davis borrowed the name “Midnight Choir” from a line in one of his favorite Leonard Cohen songs “Bird On a Wire” & since his eleven-piece outfit starting playing dates Davis & “His Midnight Choir” have witnessed growing congregations across the Southeast. See Water at Music Farm Chas, 2/24

A world without Type 1 diabetes is a world worth living in. 1770 Records and See Water are teaming up to bring you See Water's Album Release show featuring TreeHouse, Of Good Nature, and Whitehall at Music Farm Charleston on February 24th. PBR has also decided to be a part of this concert that will benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, is a major non-profit leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. JDRF's goal is to progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes from people's lives until they achieve a world without type 1 diabetes. The show starts at 8:30pm and tickets are $10 ADV/$15 DOS. 

Rocketman- A Tribute to Sir Elton John, 2/25

We love the philanthropy among our friends! Dream Makers of GFWC presents Rocketman - A Tribute to Sir Elton John aka Tokyo Joe's, Columbia, SC based band, alter-ego on February 25th at Koger Center for the Arts in Columbia, SC. Rocketman will be joined by Charlie Morgan, Elton John's drummer for 13 years, on drums. Proceeds will benefit local children's shelters. Also, there will be various auction items at the show to raise money for the children's shelters, including the guitar in this photo, below, courtesy of Bobby Barry and Graph-Itty screen printing. Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming Show & 28th Anniversary Concert RECAP

We hope all of you had an amazing holiday season! We sure did. We had the pleasure of working with our good friends, Blue Dogs, again for their 4th Annual Homecoming Show and 28th Anniversary Concert. The two-night event began at an intimate affair at Music Farm Charleston on December 27, 2016 when talented artists and bands from Charleston, SC took to the stage and captivated their audience with their hauntingly beautiful voices, zealous playing, and all around compelling performances that kept half of their veiwers' eyes locked on them, unable to peel their eyes away, and the other half lost in the melody, dancing the night away. At the end of the first night, some of the Blue Dogs and their friends closed out the show on a howling note leaving their Dog People delightfully wagging their tails for the main event the following night. 

Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming Show & 28th Anniversary Concert took place on December 28th at Charleston Music Hall. As the crowd shuffled into The Hall, all of the bands prepared themselves backstage for the event of the year; all while remembering the great reason for this event in the first place. Every year about 16,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer in the United States alone and cancer is the leading cause of death for kids in the United States. Many of these kids end up at MUSC for treatment. Although, these kids are always welcomed at MUSC for treatment, unfortunately, some are turned away due to not enough rooms or inadequate means to treat them. For this reason, Blue Dogs and friends, along with all of the sponsors who contributed, Press On Fund, and Ear For Music created this event to raise money to build the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital equipped with more rooms and better technology to give the children who come through the doors a better chance at winning their fight with cancer, and to help fund pediatric cancer research. As the audience members anxiously sat in their seats awaiting for the show to begin, the house lights shut off and the stage lights flashed on as a huge cheer rang across the venue. The main event had officially begun. Throughout the night, bands scurried on and off the stage and the crowd cheered, danced, donated, and drank merrily. Towards the end of the night, backstage in a secret room, we received some amazing and shocking news from an anonymous donor that gave chills to many and even brought tears to a few. Following the jaw-dropping news, Press On Fund agreed to match what was donated, and at approximately 11pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, the official check was signed and given to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital for pediatric cancer research for a grand total of $151k plus the other donations that had yet to be counted. Everyone cheered, hugged, and cried! We officially raised 3x more than what we raised last year and we couldn't have done it without the help of all of the bands who performed, all of the sponsors who contributed, all of the donors who donated, Music Farm Charleston, Charleston Music Hall, Press On Fund, MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, 4 Good, Tito's, JEM Marketing/Taco Bell, Blue Dogs, and all of you who have supported us and the Blue Dogs over the years. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

HAPPY NEW YEAR from all of us at Ear For Music! What a year it has been, from Party at the Point, Rockin' The River, Woolfe Street Playhouse gigs, weddings, private & corporate events, to closing out the year on a howling note with the Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming Show & 28th Anniversary Concert. We raised more than three times as much as last year and a portion of the proceeds goes to building the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and funding for pediatric cancer research.

With the turn of the new year, we have some serious Bizness to announce in the upcoming months, but for now Markie your calendars for this kick off event...

28th Annual Blue Dogs Homecoming Show

Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming & 28th Anniversary Concert and Super Goo Jam

Let the countdown begin! Just over a month away from the best two shows of the year, Super Goo Jam and Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming & 28th Anniversary Concert. We are very excited to announce that Shawn Camp & Cary Hudson of Blue Mountain will be joining us at The Charleston Music Hall this year!! So, mark your calendars for December 27th and 28th and join us for a fun-filled, two-night stand full of talented bands, charity, and camaraderie. The Super Goo Jam will kick off the first night at Music Farm Charleston on December 27th at 8PM, doors will be at 7PM, tickets are $10, and some of the bands that will be making the night memorable are Guilt Ridden Troubadour, Sally & George (featuring Joel Timmons of Sol Driven Train), Ward Buckheister, Finnegan Bell, Doug Jones, Danielle Howle, The Kenny George Band, and many more artists to be announced. Also, Cary Hudson of Blue Mountain will be doing a head lining set at the Super Goo Jam with Guilt Ridden Troubadour for all you Blue Mountain fans!! 

On December 28th, Charleston's country-rock band the Blue Dogs will once again take over the Charleston Music Hall--along with some special guests and friends--this year to celebrate 28 years of making music! This show marks their fourth "homecoming” and to solidify it as an annual affair; the band brought in the Medical University of South Carolina's Children's Hospital as a charity partner. Proceeds will benefit both the campaign for the new MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital AND the Press On Fund for pediatric cancer research. We are thrilled to announce that Shawn Camp & Cary Hudson of Blue Mountain will be our very special guests at this years Homecoming show.
 

There will be more special guests announced for both shows, so stay tuned!

Grammy award winning producer Shawn Camp has earned wide respect as the top-tier penman behind #1 Billboard hits for George Strait (“River of Love”), Josh Turner (“Would You Go With Me”) and Brooks and Dunn (“How Long Gone”), in addition to the Brooks smash “Two Pina Coladas.” Camp frequently splits pages with legendary tunesmiths like Guy Clark (“Sis Draper,” “Magnolia Wind”) and Jim Lauderdale (“Forever Ain’t No Trouble Now). Shawn also penned Blake Shelton’s “Nobody But Me”. A true artist, Camp’s previous solo albums – including 1993’s Shawn Camp, 2004’s Live at the Station Inn and Fireball in 2006 – consistently have turned heads. The accomplished instrumentalist, who has accompanied luminaries including Guy Clark and John Prine, frequently backs seamless lyrics with his fiery fiddle, guitar and mandolin riffs. Shawn is also a talented producer; a skill that won him a Grammy nomination in 2013 and a Grammy win for 2014’s Best Folk Album of the Year (Guy Clark’s, My Favorite Picture Of You). Cary Hudson is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from the great state of Mississippi who resides somewhere between Memphis and New Orleans. While living in Venice, Cary worked in a deli and hung out with the guys in Weezer (fun), walked on Zuma Beach hoping to meet Neil Young, started a band called Blue Mountain with Laurie, and experienced the Rodney King riots (not fun). After moving back to Oxford in 1992, Blue Mountain began touring nationally, signed a deal with Roadrunner Records, and recorded their classic Dog Days album with producer Eric "Roscoe" Ambel. They went on to record more albums, played shows with Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, The Jayhawks and Willie Nelson, were the cover story of the second No Depression magazine, and in 2011 were voted "Most Legendary Oxford Band" by the readers of The Local Voice. Cary has played guitar for Bobby Rush, RL Burnside, Big Jack Johnson, Shannon MacNally, Dayna Kurtz and many others in his close to thirty years on the road. He was chosen as one of the Top Ten Alternative Country Guitar Players by Gibson magazine, and his songs have appeared in TV shows and movies including the George Clooney film "Up in the Air". He recently released his sixth solo album, Town and Country (mixed by Multi-Grammy winner Trina Shoemaker).

How To Properly Maintain Your Vinyl

For the collector, the tactile experience of playing a vinyl record can amplify the enjoyment of their favorite albums. Continued enjoyment of your vinyl, of course, depends on maintaining it with proper handling, cleaning, and storing practices. Whether a new or longtime collector, make sure that you know how to care for your vinyl so that you can enjoy it for decades to come.

Handling

Handle a record by its edge or label and avoid touching the playable surface. Your fingers transfer oils to the record that increase the build-up of dust, which lowers sound quality and can damage a record if it isn’t cleaned regularly.

Use the cueing lever to guide the needle into place; a nervous twitch of your hand could scratch your record. Likewise, let the platter stop completely before you pick up the record. If the platter is still moving, you may scratch the opposite side as you lift the record.

Cleaning

Clean records before each listen to clear away debris that could damage the record while it plays. Use a dry carbon fiber brush to clear the surface: don’t press down, use light contact to clear away any debris. Move the brush in a circular motion that follows the grooves of the record. Do not use a t-shirt or a cloth rag to clear the record as they are likely to scratch your record and spread lint.

For a deeper clean, use a microfiber cleaning cloth and a cleaning solution (there are various cleaning tools to consider if you are willing to spend some extra money) You can use distilled water or make your own cleaning solution, though ordinary soaps will leave residues that may damage the record and suggested recipes are often unsound. Pick up a specialty cleaning solution meant for records at a local music shop or online. Apply enough of the solution to dampen the microfiber cloth and gently wipe the record, with minimal friction, in a circular motion following the direction of the grooves. Your turntable’s needle will also accumulate dust and need regular cleaning with a soft, fine tip brush.

After cleaning, let your records dry before playing them. If you play your records wet, the needle can push debris further into the record’s grooves and make dust and muck even harder to clean. This is why you should avoid wet playing which, though suggested by some as a way to reduce surface noise while playing a record, will seriously damage your vinyl.

Storing

After use, gently slide a record into its sleeve in order to minimize exposure to dust. Buy inner sleeves for records that do not come with them already, and use outer plastic sleeves to further protect your vinyl from dust. Store your records vertically and never stack them on top of each other, as the weight can be uneven and cause warping. Store them vertically and leave some space on the shelf. Keep your records in a cool and dry place, at or below room temperature, and out of direct sunlight. Visit the library of congress for more information on media storage.

Woolfe Street Playhouse (DT) Gets A New Act

As you were scarfing down your children's Halloween candy or telling your friend you're only having one more drink, it probably hit you that there are only 2 months left in this year. Now, you are probably frantically trying to figure out how to savor these last two months. Luckily for you, we saved the best shows for last. 
 

First, we have Moose Kick, See Water, and Little Bird at a swanky venue known as Woolfe Street Playhouse in Downtown Charleston. Woolfe Street Playhouse was originally built in 1914 and spent half a century as The Meddin Bros Meat Packing Company. By the 1980s, The Meddin Bros Company closed and the building was left empty for a while. However,  The Village Repertory Company came to the building's rescue, and with the help of Mrs. Meddin the old meat packing building transformed into the beloved Woolfe Street Playhouse we all know and love today. The Playhouse officially opened in December of 2012, and at 17,000 square feet it caters to multiple events including the one on November 11th featuring Moose Kick, See Water, and Little Bird. 
 

Moose Kick is a five piece southern rock / funk band out of South Carolina. The band began during the winter of 2013 and since they spend their days touring, writing & practicing to effectively share their music with the world. Since releasing their album 'Blue Room Revival' in October of 2014 with producer Trevor Maron, the band has taken their talent to the road touring the eastern half of the country routinely. 

See Water is the love child of reggae and punk rock. This up-and-coming band from Charleston, SC will take your ears on a roller-coaster ride through laid-back jams and hard-hitting rock riffs. Their style is similar to that of a mosh-pit on the beach at sunset. If their music was a cocktail, it would be a long island iced tea; at first you think, “There’s no way you can mix all of that together,” but sure enough, you take a sip only to find that it’s delicious and intoxicating.

See Water has been proving themselves in all their unorthodox glory at The Music Farm and Charleston Pour House, and venues throughout the east coast and the USVI, while performing alongside acts such as Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime, The Hip Abduction, Fear Nuttin Band, and Sun-Dried Vibes. See Water has released their debut EP, entitled 'Diluted Acoustica', and quickly began work on their next project. Their first full-length album 'Hit The Moon' is to be released later this fall with the first single, 'Echo', leading the way.

The Super Goo Jam will kick off the spectacular event for the Blue Dogs and their friends by having the party of the year with multiple bands and dancing to celebrate the end of the year and to help raise money for The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and Press On Foundation for pediatric cancer research. Following The Super Goo Jam is Blue Dogs 4th Annual Homecoming and 28th Anniversary concert on December 28th at Charleston Music Hall. The Blue Dogs have been performing together for over 25 years and perform up to 100 shows a year. This year, the Blue Dogs, an Americana band will have their 4th Annual Homecoming and 28th Anniversary concert that will benefit the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and Press On Foundation for pediatric cancer research. This is a special charity event that has had special appearances in the past by some of Blue Dogs dear friends such as Darius Rucker, Drivin N' Cryin, and Danielle Howle. Last year, at the 3rd Annual Homecoming and 27th Anniversary concert, the Dogs raised $50K for MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital & Pediatric Cancer research thanks to the support of Tito's Vodka, a variety of local sponsors, and donations of ticket holders, as well as a generous match by an anonymous donor. This year, we hope to surpass last year's amount and we can only do that with your help. So, we are calling all Dog People to get your tickets now and come out to this superb event on December 27th and 28th, to raise money so that the doctors at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital can find a cure for cancer that affects children.

Music fans are familiar with Humphreys’ songs, voice and guitar from his years leading North Carolina faves Dillon Fence and Hobex. With songs influenced by the best in pop, funk, soul, R&B, and rock n' roll, you might find Greg Humphreys Electric Trio in the same idiosyncratic corner of the big Americana tent where you'd find Alabama Shakes, Chris Stapleton, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, or the North Mississippi Allstars.

The Electric Trio formed in 2014 in New York City. Drummer Keith Robinson brings Texas flavor, having toured and recorded with Marcia Ball and Charlie Robison. In demand bassist Matt Brandau has backed up Elvis Costello and Joan Osborne, among others. These seasoned southern transplants played over 130 live dates in their first two years, but they took their time to make a debut studio album.

Greg Humphreys Electric Trio is the perfect band to have in The Commodore, a venue that brings that old school 1950s-60s vibe to life. If you have never been to The Commodore before, then this is the perfect time for you to check it out; and trust me when I say that you will be coming back for more because of this infectious space.  

The Movement For Breast Cancer Begins at Totties For Tatas

Their love for Sublime and Pixies brought Joshua Swain, Jordan Miller, and John Ruff, aka DJ Riggles together to form The Movement in 2004. The “alternative reggae” group resides in “Soda City”, Columbia, SC. However, after a line-up change where Jordan Miller left the group and Jason “Smiles” Schmidt and Gary Johnson joined the group, The Movement released their sixth studio album, GOLDEN, on April 8th, 2016. GOLDEN debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart. Now, The Movement will join forces with DJ Young Gumby on Thursday, October 20th in Columbia at The Vista to bring awareness to the fight against breast cancer and benefiting the 4th Annual Totties for Tatas. Totties for Tatas helps raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. So, join us on Thursday, Oct. 20th in Columbia, SC at The Vista to listen to The Movement and save the tatas.

Breast Cancer Awareness at SOL

If you can’t make it to The Vista on October 20th, then every Thursday this season SOL in Mt. Pleasant, SC is raising awareness for Breast Cancer by giving people a chance to win gift cards and other prizes at their location. SOL’s main goal is to raise breast cancer awareness and money for Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC for breast cancer research. So, head down to SOL on Thursdays in your best dressed pink attire or any pink attire and do your part in raising awareness for breast cancer.

MOOSE KICK
Moose Kick is a five piece rock n' roll powerhouse based out of the beautiful Charleston, SC. The band began in a blue room during the winter of 2013 and since has spent countless days touring, recording, mastering and sharing their sound with the world. During the summer of 2014 the band spent time in Charleston Sound Studios where they recorded their first full length album "Blue Room Revival" which is available on iTunes and all major music selling platforms today. After working with the band throughout the summer, sound engineer Trevor Maron deemed the sound as progressive-southern-funk, which truly rings out in the band's first album. Since releasing the album in October of 2014 the band has taken their talent to the road touring virtually nonstop, and selling out shows throughout the region. Great strides and long hours have created a very unique writing process which has ultimately translated into a heavy hitting yet beautiful live performance. 

SEE WATER
See Water is the love child of reggae and punk rock. This up-and-coming band from Charleston, SC will take your ears on a roller-coaster ride through laid-back jams and hard-hitting rock riffs. Their style is similar to that of a mosh-pit on the beach at sunset. If their music was a cocktail, it would be a long island iced tea; at first you think, “There’s no way you can mix all of that together,” but sure enough, you take a sip only to find that it’s delicious and intoxicating.

See Water has been proving themselves in all their unorthodox glory at The Music Farm and Charleston Pour House, and venues throughout the east coast and the USVI, while performing alongside acts such as Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime, The Hip Abduction, Fear Nuttin Band, and Sun-Dried Vibes. See Water has released their debut EP, entitled 'Diluted Acoustica', and quickly began work on their next project. Their first full-length album 'Hit The Moon' is to be released later this fall with the first single, 'Echo', leading the way.

LITTLE BIRD
Little Bird, hailing from Annapolis, MD and calling Charleston, SC home for one year now, tours throughout the eastern half of the country. They blend surf rock, jazz, and Americana into a high energy killer live show. In 2015 & 2016 the band played & headlined festivals such as Bayfunk, Pink Moon, Silopanna, Doah, EastPortaRockin' and more. Along with sharing stage on show bills with names like G. Love & Special Sauce, Pressing Strings, Long Miles, Fortunate Youth, and many more.

Brunch!!

Imagine it is the weekend and you woke up too late for breakfast, but it is still too early for lunch, and on top of it all you are not in the mood to cook a meal for yourself. What do you do? If you are looking for more of an old-school, 1920s atmosphere for brunch, then Prohibition on King Street is the place to be. Prohibition is the perfect combination of classy and mischievous. Add a duo playing softly in the background and you have the perfect setting for a Sunday brunch. If you want more of a fine-dining experience for your brunch extravaganza, then be prepared to be “mimosa-and-dined” at Halls Chophouse on King Street. This year, Halls Chophouse won seven categories, including Best Overall Restaurant in The Post and Courier Charleston’s Choice Awards. Paired with The Plantation Singers every Sunday for brunch, adding a whole new meaning to the phrase “A taste of the lowcountry,” it is no wonder that Halls Chophouse won all those awards. So, come Sunday, ditch the mess of pots and pans, grab your friends and head to Prohibition or Halls Chophouse and enjoy a delectable brunch with the accompaniment of music booked by yours truly, Ear For Music. 

Naughty or Nice Santa 

A special note from Cara Mohr - If you were anything like me as a kid, then whenever the holidays rolled around and someone asked me if I were on the naughty or nice list, I would immediately start to reminisce on my year to try and determine whether or not I’d be expecting candy or a lump of coal in my stocking. If you were like me, then you know just how daunting that question can be as a kid. Luckily, that question has a lighter and more of a fun tone to it, now. With the holidays right around the corner, Santas will be in high demand. Luckily for you, we have a Santa you can book, along with bands and DJs, that will have people talking about your party for days. But this time, when this Santa asks if you have been naughty or nice this year it won’t matter either way because you will still get a present whether it be alcohol or a candy cane. However, if you want this Santa at your party, then book him now before it is too late!

Fallin' Leaves & Fallin' in Love--The Ultimate September Wedding Blog

With the turn of the month comes the ultimate wedding season. September brings the start of a new season and for many the start of a new life as a newlywed. So what do you expect to see during this wedding season? Well, expect to see a more laid back, fun, whimsical approach to the big day. Gone are the traditional, stiff, boring approaches to weddings, and taking its place are donut walls, boho-style dresses, be your own barista or mixologist, and a hands on approach to weddings with the goal to have their attendees feel a part of the ceremony in more ways than just being the guest of the bride or groom. Following are some of the top trends of this wedding season: 

THE DRESS

For the more laid-back bride go for the boho off-the-shoulder wedding dress. You can even add flowers in your hair to add that extra touch of a free-spirit bride. 

If you’re the more whimsical and fun type of bride then try a fun new trend and go for a nontraditional color or print wedding dress for your big day. 

If you’re more traditional and love the classical, regal look then add a faux fur shawl to your dress to give you a dash of old-Hollywood and glam. 

BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES/GROOMSMEN ATTIRE

Mismatched bridesmaids are the hit this season. Long gone are the overly expensive ugly bridesmaids dresses that you only get to wear once. Now it’s all about the bridesmaids getting to choose their own styles and colors. 

As for the groomsmen it’s all about keeping it simple and neutral. 

THE BOUQUET

Today is all about the wild and the free. So pick those wild flowers and create your own bouquet with long uncut stems and berries. Some favorite picks are wine colored dahlias, Brazilian pepper berries, hypericum berry spray, and small vines of ivy to elongate the shape of traditionally arranged bouquets. 

THE CAKE

Sayonara to traditional big cakes with toppers and fondant. Taking its place are small, simple cakes with no toppers and buttercream icing. One option is a cake with drip designs. 

Or you can match your boho-style wedding with a cake with foliage 

Another in demand cake this season is the “Naked” cake…a cake with little to no frosting on the outside.

THE FOOD

Continuing on the food train, gone are the days of main dishes and only two choices of food. Instead, have a more hands on approach and don’t be afraid to get creative! Instead of only a couple of options for beer do a local craft beer tasting. Or if you’re a taco lover like me, have a build your own taco bar and add a build your own margarita bar to pair with it. If you are opting for a more rustic wedding have a pig roast or BBQ and pair it with a BBQ sauce station to let your guests try a variety of sauces. Another option you can do to give your guests a taste of you and your partner’s background is have the main dish be one from your heritage or have each of you choose your favorite family dish to be shared with your guests. Another fun take on the food option is bite size food with alcohol shooters such as pretzel bites paired with local craft beer, bite size tacos with margarita shooters, bite size apple pie with moscato d’Asti, or brownie bites with frozen espresso shooters. When guests are arriving you can have a doughnut wall for them to munch on while they wait for the ceremony to begin and you can pair it with a gourmet coffee bar to give your guests an extra boost so they can last for the night’s festivities. Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts is our favorite place to get delectable doughnuts here in Charleston, SC and they even have doughnut cakes now!

THE DRINKS

A fun simple way to take care of the drink situation is His & Hers cocktails. The guests are given a glimpse into what kind of drinks you two like and your partner gets to feel like they have a say in the planning of the big day, too. 

Rosés champagne and wine are always a classy go-to. Another more adventurous route is a beer garden or tequila, wine, or margarita gardens. Also, grown-up popsicles are making their statement at weddings and are becoming the must- have treat at your big day. Check out King of Pops Charleston for the best popsicles and grown-up popsicles. With over 500 flavors, you will be able to provide even the pickiest of eaters with a popsicle. King of Pops prides themselves off of creating popsicles with all natural ingredients and no artificial sweetners. They even have vegan popsicles! 

THE RECEPTION

Tables, tables, tables so many arrangements yet still not enough ways to arrange them.
Tablecloths:  Metallic, Glitzy Golds, Rose-gold, but absolutely NO SILVER! 

Instead of large round tables use long rectangular tables or mix of long tables surrounded by smaller square and round tables. 

Table flower arrangements are all about green and leafy:  succulent, eucalyptus, wheat greens, acacia and bay leaf branches. Also, the taller the better if you’re dealing with flower arrangements. Otherwise, short and neat succulent arrangements on tables are the hit for this season. 

A fun addition can be to add some lounge seating for your guests so they can feel more comfortable when taking a break from the dance floor. 

Another way to bring a little bit more of you and your partner’s life into the big day is by adding touches from key moments of your life. For example, if you two are music lovers then instead of a typical reception book use old records of your favorite bands for your guests to sign, then after the wedding you can hang it up in your new home.

THE MUSIC

Many people think that music is just for the dance floor. However, you can add a whole new element to your wedding day by incorporating different genres of music throughout your big day. This season it is all about the variety of music and mixing it up.

For example, you could have a violinist like our very own Seth G. for your cocktail hour to welcome your guests as they become acquainted with your other guests and reminisce on the two of you. 

Then, to kick this celebration into high gear and carry it into the night you can have a DJ or band like our very own DJ Natty Heavy, DJ YNot, or DJ Rdot to get people dancing until the sun comes up.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER/VIDEOGRAPHER

Finally to tie everything together and to give you physical evidence and to allow you to reminisce on your big day for years to come, have a professional photographer and videographer to capture all the moments you were a part of and those you missed. 

Rockin' The River with Ellen Drive and Jump Castle Riot- 8/11

"Um...no. But, you can catch Ellen Drive AND Jump Castle Riot at Riverfront Park on Thursday, August 11th for the second to last Rockin' The River."

Can you believe it is already the second to last Rockin' The River for this year, and that there are only four more months left for this year, too? We can't either! If you feel like time keeps slipping away without any memories to go with it, then you need to change that and go see Ellen Drive and Jump Castle Riot this Thursday at Rockin' The River. Ellen Drive is a jazz, R&B, and rock band that reigns from Summerville, SC. They consist of a four-man band with Randall Fowler as frontman, Aron Robinson on drums, Justin Hodge on guitar and vocals, and Andy Freeman on bass. Teaming up with Ellen Drive is Jump Castle Riot. 

Jump Castle Riot is a blues/rock band from Charleston, SC. They consist of a female and male four-piece ensemble with Nina-Rose Murchison on vocals and guitar, Julia Van Raalte on guitar and vocals, Asher Dibernardo on drums, and Richard Hartnett on bass. Since their formation in 2015, Jump Castle Riot has performed with a variety of people including The Travelin' Kine, Dead 27's, Atlas Road Crew, Elise Testone, Thomas Champagne, and blues legend Buddy Guy. So, come make another lasting memory for this year and see Ellen Drive and Jump Castle Riot this Thursday, August 11th at Rockin' The River.

Where has the time gone?! We can't believe it is already August and the kids are getting ready for another school year. But no worries, we have plenty of fun events lined up for this month that we are excited to share with all of you!

Rocket Man- A Tribute to Sir Elton John 

We are thrilled to team up with Charleston Music Hall and bring an eccentric Rocket Man:  A Tribute to Sir Elton John to the community of Charleston, SC on Saturday, August 6th at 8pm. Tokyo Joe's - Rocket Man Tribute conforms to the model of a real Elton John concert. With multiple costume changes, electrifying light displays, and the everlasting music of Elton John, many people will have to constantly remind themselves that they are not at an actual Elton John concert. Performed by the Columbia, SC based rock quartet Tokyo Joe, Rocket Man is sure to leave every Elton John fan feeling as though they have experienced a tribute performance worthy of the original. 

Rockin' The River 

Can you believe we are already past the half way point for Rockin' The River? Neither can we. With only two more left, we are feeling a little bittersweet. But no worries, you can catch the last two Rockin' The River on August 11th with Ellen Drive and Jump Castle Riot and on August 18th with Departure (The Ultimate Journey Tribute Band) at the beautiful Riverfront Park in North Charleston. 

DJ Natty Heavy and Hootie & The Blowfish

We are stoked to have our very own DJ Natty Heavy kick off both nights of the Hootie & The Blowfish Homegrown concert event here in Charleston, SC on August 5th and 6th. This wonderful two day event raises money for area schools and will be at the Volvo Car Stadium in Daniel Island. 

O.A.R - August 20th

We can't wait to have O.A.R at Riverfront Park in North Charleston on Saturday, August 20th. O.A.R is known for its intense, vibrant, live show - including selling out Madison Square Garden twice - and the communal feeling it shares with its fans. Robie Howell, also known as DJ rDOT, is one of Charleston's most talented DJs. He's been entertaining and attracting party-goers from near and far for more than ten years. Whether he's bringing the hype to Charleston's hottest clubs or being asked to work beside the most popular DJs and entertainers in the industry, rDOT has a history of never disappointing. He is available for corporate events, weddings, and clubs.

But, instead of Grey Street make sure you go to 1001 Everglades Dr, North Charleston, SC on Thursday, August 4th at 5:30pm to catch The Dave Matthews Tribute Band. The Dave Matthews Tribute Band is the only nationally touring tribute to the Dave Matthews Band. This 6-piece ensemble's goal is to pay homage to their famous counterparts by matching the excitement, energy, intensity and intimacy of a Dave Matthews Band live show. Many people agree that these guys sound like the real Dave Matthews Band. Even Rick Grant of Entertaining U in Jacksonville, FL said, "The Dave Matthews Tribute Band turned out to exceed its billing as a quality improvisational band that uses Dave Matthews material as themes to improvise. Clearly, this distinguishes them from their other so-called tribute bands. The band is exceptionally tight and produces a solid groove over which the players improvise with hot chops." So, come on out and join us for the next Rockin' The River this Thursday, August 4th at Riverfront Park in North Charleston gates at 5:30pm and show starts at 6:30 with The Dave Matthews Tribute Band.
